Car Insurance Matters

About Me

Car Insurance Matters

I still remember the day that I drove off of that used car lot with my first car. In my excitement to show off my new ride to my friends, I smashed my car into a telephone pole. Although I can laugh about the accident now, it was devastating at the time. In addition to completely destroying my reputation, I also had to deal with the expenses that were involved with the wreck. Unfortunately, I hadn't purchased car insurance, so I had to foot the repair bills on my own. After getting my car fixed and thinking about my actions, it was very clear to me that I needed to invest in a car insurance policy. I decided to learn as much as I could about insurance, and that is one of the reasons that I decided to become an insurance agent.

What Questions Should You Ask Your Auto Insurance Agent

If this is the first time you have been involved in an accident, there are probably a million questions running through your mind. The best person to address your concerns is your auto insurance agent. This is because they have industry knowledge about your auto insurance policy and how claims are processed.

Asking the right questions will help you know what to expect and how to pursue fair compensation. The main questions you should ask your insurance agent are discussed below.

What Information Is Required for an Auto Accident Claim?

After an auto accident, it is critical to gather the information that will prove your compensation claim. You should ask your insurance agent to clarify the information that will help build a strong case.

The typical information required for auto accident claims includes:

  • The name, address, and phone numbers of the drivers and occupants involved in the accident
  • The insurance policy details for the driver(s) involved in the accident
  • The police officer(s) responding to the accident and the compiled report
  • The date, time, and scene of the accident

What Is Covered in Your Insurance Policy?

When shopping for an insurance policy, many people seek the advice of an insurance agent on the appropriate coverage. Therefore, ask them whether the accident is covered by your insurance policy.

Additionally, your insurance agent will highlight some factors that will weaken your claim. For example, if you are partially at fault for the accident, you will receive a smaller damage award than if the other party was fully liable for the accident.

To be compensated for an auto accident, you need to have collision coverage and liability insurance. Your insurance agent will inform you of the policy limits and the amount of deductible you should pay for the insurance company to cover the remaining expenses. Knowing what your insurance policy covers and its limits help you prepare for your insurance claim.

Will the Accident Affect Your Insurance Rates?

One of the factors that affect insurance rates is your driving record. Others include the kind of vehicle you drive, the purposes for which you use it, and your residence.

Usually, if another driver is liable for the accident, it will not affect your insurance rates. However, if you are fully or partially liable for the accident, expect your premiums to increase. This is because the accident will affect your driving record.

If you cause property damage of a specific amount and don't get a conviction for a moving violation, you may not get any points on your driver's license. Therefore, your insurance premiums will not be affected. Find out how the accident will affect your insurance premiums by asking your insurance agent.
